Chapter Six

“Tia Rosa left you a plate. It's in the fridge. Sit down. I'll grab it for you,” Dawson offered as Tyson and Ramiro entered the house solemnly.

Without uttering a word all the way home, the men were spent. The afternoon had proved to be more than anyone bargained for. Tyson was tired and starving but too proud to admit it, and his boss was disappointed and overwhelmed by some of what he’d heard Tyson say while at the podium. What little Tyson had revealed sent chills down his spine, and he needed time to process it and figure out an approach that wouldn't send the younger man into defense mode.

Happy to have a plate of food waiting for him, Tyson thanked Mama Rosa, who greeted him with a warm hug, to his surprise. He didn't resist. Her heartstrings tugged when he tensed up at her touch. Oh, this poor man, she thought, backing away from him to allow him some space. Without realizing he'd held his breath, he released the tightness in his lungs and forced his attention to his plate, devouring the contents.

“I'm heading out for a bit, boys,” Mama started. “Get some rest, Tyson. I fixed the guest room for you so you won't be disturbed.”

Dawson quickly stood up to make himself look busy, hoping that no one noticed his eyes light up at the thought of Ty being alone in the house with him for a bit. Ramiro went outside to work, and experience told Dawson that his uncle would spend the remaining daylight hours hard at work. Juliana spent most evenings with friends.

“Where's my keys?” Tyson asked.

As Dawson dug them out of his back pocket, Tyson studied him. Damn, he's hot! His mind wandering to places he was afraid to go, Tyson stood up and started to make his way out the door.

“Wait!” Dawson called after him a little too desperately, he noticed. “Don't you want to see the room?”

“Nah. I'll go back to my own bunk.” Having no excuse readily available, Tyson fumbled with his words. “Uh, I mean... I'll...” Running his hand through his hair and stopping to take some quick breaths, he tried again, “Yeah. I need to lay down. My brain is foggy. Show me the room.”

“Well, here it is,” Dawson stammered, turning to leave. “Get some rest. You look like you need it. I have some studying to do. My room is down the hall. Holler if you need me... um, I mean, if you need anything... something. Alright, well, see you, then.” Tyson must think I'm an idiot! What is wrong with me?

Dawson walked into his room and started to close the door behind him when firm hands grasped his hips and flung him full circle around. “Tyson? What are you...”

Tyson yanked Dawson into his arms and held tightly while forcing his lips over the surprised man’s. Their tongues met, and Dawson stopped resisting long enough to feel the rippled muscles down Ty's back before remembering that they were in his uncle's house.
